a mix from 2005

Jazzy Funky Snazzy is a mix I made in or around 2005! The program I was using was musicmatch that came with the computer. If memoryserves me right they  got bought by yahoo and one day I tried to burn a playlist but it said I wasn't licenced to do so. In my frustrastion I deleted music match and uploaded the iTunes program that came with my ipod.Although I enjoyed the fancy cover art printing options music mat had I don't regret switching to iTunes. Screw you musicmatch!

mixtapes and memories!

Heres a mixtape from 1995.
Sometime after a school Dance,Frank would lend me some of his CDs to listen to over the weekend.Often times I had a mixtape started already. It would started off with songs I picked from my collection and end up being songs from Franks collection.Friends and family were blown away by this when I made them a mix.
Trish? What were you drinking when you made this mix?some would ask. The Musical Genres were all over the road.I would go from classic rock to country and back and then go into the hits of the day.I still do that! One time I was DJing a fundraiser and a friend of  a friend who Deejayed clubs said Damn shes so Eclectic!
Yuup that's me!

CD mixes a new start

OK so In The spring of 2003 I found myself packing up all my albums tapes and CDs into boxes.Nancy told me after we got settles in the new house I would get a computer and make CD mixes because no one listens to tapes anymore.
I just become computer literate.I knew how to send and receive email but that was the extent of it.Advancing at such a fast pace scared the crap out of me. I did not want to become a slave to technology like many folks I knew already were.
Soon after Moving in our new house I started back making mix tapes when one night the record side of the dual cassette player broke.I saw some piece go flying as I ejected a tape.I was done, finished! No more mixtapes.
my heart sank.
a few weeks later was my birthday.Molly made me a CD mix.someone alse gave me a pack of CDrs.I thanks them but must have had a baffled look on my face like ok CDrs but I don't have a computer.my sister then informed me that one night we will get on they're computer and order me a computer. A few days later we did.By Thankgiving I had my own computer and was learning about all kinds of things. There was a music program called Music Match.it was cool. I loaded most all the music I had on it.
a Year Later I replaced music match with iTunes.
Slowly but surely this new technology which I was so scared of wasn't as hard to learn as I thought. Technology was becoming my friend.
Making CD mixes was easy.Point, click, drag and save!
creating cover art was fun too!I'm back baby!
After we moved I discovered my turntable missing.Replacing all my albums would take years. After replacing many albums with CDs I either gave my records to folks who wanted them or got store credit at a local novelty store and bought more CDs.
in the spring of 2007 I bought my own DJ gear.and a month after buying it I was DJing a 40th birthday Party of a friend.
The mix queen was back.I still have a many of the cassette mixes which I listen to in the car from time to time or on my downstairs stereo.
A many years now I have been a member of a mixtape group called the international mixtape project. The large group of folks who like me love making a sharing CD mixes.

www.internationalmixtapeproject.com

I discovered then one night search the web wondering if there were any group dedicated to folks like me to love making mixes.Heck theres a whole bunch of us world wide!Yes world wide!
There was another group the zenrunning order which only lasted a few years but I made many online friends during its short stay. I continue mixing with these friends.
We compare notes on what inspires a mix and the creative process. Many have gone to mixcloud route but I would rather sending by mail or giving someone in person. Its more fun and personal.
Sending and receiving that 6x9 envelope still is thrilling to me.
Seeing someones reaction when I give them a mix is great too.
their eyes widen " oo another Trish mix,Yay!"
once in a while someone will ask me for a custom mix.I recently made one for my nephew for his birthday!

OK now that you know my story Id love to read YOU story of a mixtape.

what got me started making mixes

It was back in the late 10970s
A friend lent me some 45s to borrow.I recorded them to cassette.I used to do this with some records too.
Around the mid 1980s my Cousin Steve made a couple of mixtapes for his sisters wedding. He hand wrote the song and the artist on the index card.We started talking about music. He told be how he made them.
During this time I started to take power walks to stay in shape. Having some music to listen to might help motivate me,so I started making mixtapes.
not long after that I was on a tight budget and was wondering what to get my dad.The light went on.
A mixtape!
I dint have much of what he liked in my collection at the time so I had to sneak into his record collection when he wasn't home to borrow his records.I almost got caught a few times but managed to pulled it off.
When he opened it opened he liked the tracklist. He asked me where I got the music and I told him my story of daring do.
Making his mixtape was fun and an education in the music of the 40s and early 50s.I got turned on to it too but a hip girl in her 20s doesn't dare admit that.at least I didn't!
being dad liked his mixtape I started making mixtapes for other family and then branched out to friends.
In the early 1990s our custodian started to DJ the school Dances and I helped him.I would cue up the tape to songs we thought the kids would like. He eventually upgraded to CDs so I was just an observer and later tried to do little DJ spots while he went on a small break and years later he confessed they were smoking breaks when you could still smoke in the teachers room!
I made tapes for friends If I was going to a party.I made tapes if someone needed music for long car rides.
If I dint have the money to go out and buy new music, I went to the library.Yardsales and flea markets were good too.
Many times Id be making a mix and the phone would ring or someone would stop by.My creative process got interrupted and often fouled up my train of thought and my editing skills .
I was discovering the greatness of other genres through making mixes for others.Once in a while someone would give my 5 or 10 bucks encouraging me to go out and buy more blank tapes!
in the ealy 2000s I was the mixtape queen of Bay Head.
sadly in January of 2003 my mom died.my creative engines died with her.
My dad and sister put the House on the market and everything had to be packed up.I made a tape or two before moving but I felt I lost the spark to make great mixes. The excitement wasn't what it used to be.
..To Be Continued!
